Why Did Abraham Stop

at Ten Righteous People?

Pastor Bob Thibodeau dives into a conversation about God's promise to Abram in Genesis, where He tells him that he will have a son in nine months. The episode touches on the importance of intercession, as seen when Abram pleads with God to spare Sodom if there are righteous people there.

The discussion continues about how Abram stops counting at ten, reflecting his belief in Lot's family being faithful. Pastor Bob emphasizes that God values intercession for others, even if they're not close to you. The episode wraps up with an invitation for listeners to share their thoughts on why Abram stopped at ten and to engage with the show.

Speaker A:

Hello, everyone.

Speaker A:

Pastor Bob Thibodeau here.

Speaker A:

Welcome to your 15 minute daily Bible walk.

Speaker A:

Today.

Speaker A:

We're so blessed you're joining us.

Speaker A:

Last time we left off in Genesis, chapter 18 and verse 16.

Speaker A:

And this is when the Lord is telling Abram, I'll be back in nine months and you're gonna have a boy.

Speaker A:

Okay?

Speaker A:

And that's where we left off at.

Speaker A:

And we had a pretty humorous conversation with that.

Speaker A:

So go back and listen to the previous episode if you missed it.

Speaker A:

Amen.

Speaker A:

So we'll begin today in Genes, chapter 18, beginning in verse 16.

Speaker A:

Is there anything too hard for the Lord?

Speaker A:

Because I'm sorry.

Speaker A:

That's verse 14, verse 16.

Speaker A:

This is now where they're getting up to leave.

Speaker A:

I'm sorry.

Speaker A:

And the men rose up from there, looked towards Sodom, and Abram went with them to bring them on their way.

Speaker A:

And verse 17 and the Lord, remember, Lord is capitalized as saying Elohim.

Speaker A:

And the Elohim said, shall I hide from Abram that thing which I do, seeing that Abram shall surely become a great and mighty nation.

Speaker A:

And all the nations of the earth shall be blessed in him, for I know him.

Speaker A:

Now get this.

Speaker A:

Now this is very important.

Speaker A:

He will command his children and his household after him, that they shall keep the way of the Elohim to do justice and judgment that the Elohim may bring upon Abraham that which he has spoken of him.

Speaker A:

And the Elohim said, because the cry of Sodom and Gomorrah is great and because their sin is very grievous, I will go down now and see whether they have done altogether according to the cry of it which has come upon me.

Speaker A:

If not, I'll know it.

Speaker A:

And the men turned their faces from there and went towards Sodom.

Speaker A:

But Abraham stood yet before the Lord, before the Elohim.

Speaker A:

And Abraham drew.

Speaker A:

Well, let's stop right there for a second.

Speaker A:

Why is God going to explain what he's about to do to Abraham?

Speaker A:

It's because of the covenant they cut.

Speaker A:

Covenant.

Speaker A:

It's because of this covenant God says, here's what's going to happen.

Speaker A:

And this is why.

Speaker A:

Okay?

Speaker A:

God felt obliged to tell Abraham what was about to happen.

Speaker A:

One Lot's over there.

Speaker A:

Okay, his covenant was Abraham, but he understands lot.

Speaker A:

Abraham cares about lot.

Speaker A:

So he's going to tell him what's about to happen.

Speaker A:

And I also believe that he knew Abraham's heart.

Speaker A:

God knew Abraham's heart, that Abraham was going to intercede.

Speaker A:

Which is why when the two angels left to head their way, God still Stayed right there, he says, before Abraham.

Speaker A:

Okay, so let's go up here now.

Speaker A:

Verse 23.

Speaker A:

And Abraham drew near and said, will you destroy the righteous with the wicked peradventure or What?

Speaker A:

If there's 50 righteous people within that city, will you also destroy and not spare the place for the 50 righteous that are in it that be far from you to do after this manner, to slay the righteous with the wicked, and that the righteous should be as the wicked?

Speaker A:

What he's saying here is that just doesn't make sense.

Speaker A:

God, that's not like you.

Speaker A:

Shall not the Judge of all the earth do what's right?

Speaker A:

Oh man.

Speaker A:

Imagine having that kind of relationship with God where you could talk to him like that.

Speaker A:

Guess what?

Speaker A:

You do you have that kind of relationship with our Heavenly Father through Christ Jesus.

Speaker A:

Amen.

Speaker A:

Praise the Lord.

Speaker A:

So let's see now what God says.

Speaker A:

And remember, we're talking about the L O R D capitalized.

Speaker A:

That's Halloween.

Speaker A:

That's the Triune Godhead.

Speaker A:

The representation of the Triune Godhead.

Speaker A:

God the Father, God the Son, God the Holy Spirit.

Speaker A:

Three in one.

Speaker A:

So that's right there.

Speaker A:

It could be the incarnate Jesus if you want to go that down that path.

Speaker A:

Okay, I'm not arguing that point.

Speaker A:

We're not discussing that point.

Speaker A:

Halloween, capital L O R D, the Elohim.

Speaker A:

That's the tri, the Godhead.

Speaker A:

Okay, so here he says, shall not the Judge of all the earth do right?

Speaker A:

And Elohim said, if I find in Sodom 50 righteous people within the city, then I'll spare all the place because of them for their sake.

Speaker A:

And Abram answered and said, behold, now that I've taken upon me to speak unto my Lord, which I'm just dusted ashes, but per adventure there are, there shall lack five of the 50 righteous.

Speaker A:

Will you destroy all the city just because it lacked 5?

Speaker A:

He said, if I find there's 45 there, I will not destroy it.

Speaker A:

And he spoke to him yet again and said, per adventure, there's only 40, what if there's only 40?

Speaker A:

He said, I will not do it for 40 sake.

Speaker A:

I will not destroy it for 40's sake.

Speaker A:

Verse 30.

Speaker A:

And he said unto him, oh, let not the Lord be angry with me.

Speaker A:

I'm going to speak again here, peradventure.

Speaker A:

What if there's only 30 there?

Speaker A:

And God said, I will not do it if I find 30 righteous there.

Speaker A:

I said, behold, now I've taken upon me to speak unto the Lord, peradventure, there's only 20 there he said, I will not destroy it for the 20 sake.

Speaker A:

And he said, oh, let not the Lord be angry.

Speaker A:

I'm going to speak yet this once more per adventures.

Speaker A:

There's only 10 there.

Speaker A:

And he said, I will not destroy it for the ten sake.

Speaker A:

And the Lord went His way.

Speaker A:

Verse 33.

Speaker A:

And as soon as he left communion with Abraham, and Abraham returned his place.

Speaker A:

Now, I want you to see something here.

Speaker A:

A lot of people say, why did Abraham stop counting at 10?

Speaker A:

Yeah, well, Abraham stopped counting because, you know, think about it.

Speaker A:

Abraham was in seed, interceding here in behalf of a people.

Speaker A:

God likes that.

Speaker A:

God likes you to intercede for others, okay?

Speaker A:

Even if they're not closely related to you.

Speaker A:

He appreciates it when you are praying and interceding for other people.

Speaker A:

That's lesson number one here.

Speaker A:

But also, we got to look at why 10?

Speaker A:

Why didn't he get to five?

Speaker A:

I mean, here, you know, you see here.

Speaker A:

And when you get into it, Lot, the two daughters, his wife, right?

Speaker A:

And.

Speaker A:

And the, you know, there's four.

Speaker A:

Well, what about the other daughters?

Speaker A:

There's daughters in there that are married.

Speaker A:

And we're going to see that.

Speaker A:

Let's see if I can get down to find out that's where that's at.

Speaker A:

Okay?

Speaker A:

Because I want you to see this, okay?

Speaker A:

Verse 14.

Speaker A:

We're going to read beginning chapter 19.

Speaker A:

But I want to draw your attention over here to answer this question.

Speaker A:

Why did Abraham stop interceding?

Speaker A:

And verse 12, the men said, a lot.

Speaker A:

Are there any here besides you?

Speaker A:

Son in law, your sons, your daughters, whatsoever, bring them out of this place.

Speaker A:

For we're going to destroy this place, because the cry is growing great before the face of the Elohim.

Speaker A:

And Elohim has sent us to destroy it.

Speaker A:

Lot went out.

Speaker A:

He left the house, spoke to his sons in law, plural, okay, which married his daughters, plural, and said, get up.

Speaker A:

Get out of this place.

Speaker A:

But he seemed as one that mocked.

Speaker A:

Was his son in laws basically mocked?

Speaker A:

So let's look at this.

Speaker A:

You have lots.

Speaker A:

You have his wife and two daughters.

Speaker A:

There's four right there.

Speaker A:

Sons, plural.

Speaker A:

Well, let's go five and six.

Speaker A:

Daughters, plural.

Speaker A:

Seven and eight does not say.

Speaker A:

But what if there was three daughters that had been married?

Speaker A:

That would make sense, right?

Speaker A:

Three daughters, three sons in law.

Speaker A:

There's six.

Speaker A:

The two daughters that are still at home, the wife and lot.

Speaker A:

10, 10 people right there.

Speaker A:

And Abram said, what if there's only, you know, we.

Speaker A:

We worked our way down from the whole city, all the way down to.

Speaker A:

If there's 10.

Speaker A:

What if there's 10?

Speaker A:

Only 10 righteous people in the whole place.

Speaker A:

And God said, if there's 10 there, I won't destroy it.

Speaker A:

Abraham left off county because he believed Lot at least had his family born again.

Speaker A:

Well, we can't say born again.

Speaker A:

Had his family serving the Lord in that city.

Speaker A:

He just, you know, he just assumed Lot had taken control of at least his family and kept them serving the Lord.

Speaker A:

I mean, Lot was brought up serving the Lord.

Speaker A:

Amen.

Speaker A:

He's seen the blessing on Abraham.

Speaker A:

He said he's experiencing the blessing that God put on Abraham and upon him because he's Abraham's kin folk.

Speaker A:

Okay?

Speaker A:

So Abraham got it all the way down to 10.

Speaker A:

He said, okay, I got Lot in his family protected now.

Speaker A:

That's all that matters, right?

Speaker A:

And Abraham went back home.

Speaker A:

God went back to, you know, went back to what he was about to do.

Speaker A:

Amen.

Speaker A:

And you can see that when you start reading in chapter 19 and get all the way down into verse 14.

Speaker A:

Spoke to his sons in law, plural.

Speaker A:

So here, if they have three daughters, he has three daughters who are married.

Speaker A:

There are six people.

Speaker A:

And then his two daughters still at home, him and himself and his wife.

Speaker A:

That's 10.

Speaker A:

That's what Abraham was counting on.

Speaker A:

But it didn't work out that way, because here you see in verse 14, that to his sons in law and his daughters, he seemed as one that mocked.

Speaker A:

Mocked.

Speaker A:

They were mocking him, dad.

Speaker A:

There you go again, talking about how many of us have heard that stuff.

Speaker A:

Amen.

Speaker A:

All right, I'm just gonna leave it right there.

Speaker A:

Matter of fact, we're gonna stop right there for today, and we'll take it up again next time in chapter 19.

Speaker A:

All right?

Speaker A:

Drop down the show notes, leave your comments there.

Speaker A:

Share your thoughts on that.

Speaker A:

Why did God start or Abram Abraham stop at 10?

Speaker A:

Tell me your thoughts, whether or not that makes sense to you, right?

Speaker A:

I enjoy reading your comments.

Speaker A:

All right?

Speaker A:

Sometimes I interact back and all that when I have time.

Speaker A:

But until next time, this Pastor Bob reminding you to be blessed in all that you do.

About the Podcast

15 Minute Daily Bible Walk
Verse by Verse Through The Bible
This has been a project I have been contemplating for a long time.

Join me in walking through the Bible on our personal Bible study - one verse at at time. There is no "preaching" here. Just simple scripture reading with brief explanations and examples of what the scripture mean.

I was inspired to do this project based upon the program "Through The Bible" with Dr. Jay Veron McGee (who is passed on to be with the Lord for several years now). When I first started to study the Bible, his radio program helped me immensely. It took Dr. McGee 5 years to do a complete Bible Study.

I do not know how long it will take us. But you can start listening at anytime. My goal is to create a new episode each and every day (365 days per year).

Of course, "sometimes" life will get in the way (for many reasons). But I will pick it right back up where we left off (and try to catch up the days that were missed - to help keep us on track).

As I continue to add more episodes, you can join us at the most recent program or start at the beginning. Each episode is labeled as to the scriptures we are going to discuss.

I am so blessed you are here and I pray you will get a huge blessing as we join together in a "15 Minute Daily Bible Walk!" Amen!

About your host

Profile picture for Robert Thibodeau

Robert Thibodeau

I am a 12 year Army veteran as both enlisted and as a commissioned Cavalry Officer.
I am now a retired law enforcement supervisor...

I had my own business for seven years before I entered law enforcement.

As a cop, I was injured on the job on May 12, 2007 and after several surgeries over a couple of years, forced to retire in 2011.

As I was looking down the road to “what am I going to do next?” I started what is now known as a podcast (I had no clue at the time).

Within six months of starting (what I called) “My online radio program” I was offered an opportunity to be on nationwide AM radio. I learned A LOT in one year of doing that!

I then started the online Christian radio platform "Evangelism Radio" in the fall of 2010. It has had listeners in 160+ nations and all 50 states. We host 50+ Christian broadcasters on a weekly basis. We have been operating 24/7 for almost 14 years now. We have been rated #1 in the world by Shoutcast. com on several occasions in our genre. We recently transferred ownership of Evangelism Radio to another ministry so I could concentrate full time on podcasting, preaching and writing.

In 2018, I started the Kingdom Cross Roads Podcast to conduct interviews with Christian influencers from all walks of life and to play their interviews on the radio station. (The KCR Podcast has its own time slot on Evangelism Radio)!
We now have over 1600 episodes and almost 1100 interviews (in just over 6 years).

Looking out at the future of online Christian media, I noticed there was no viable platforms that catered only to the Christian podcast market.

In 2023, we launched a networking platform called, "FaithCasters" which connects "Great Christian podcasters with Great Christian Guests!" This helps to promote the work you do through podcast interviews! Check it out at https://FaithCaster.org

We recently launched "FaithCaster Academy" which serves as a training hub for ALL of our trainings (podcast training / speaker training / interview training, etc.). Members receive access to ALL of our training programs for one low, monthly membership fee. Members also receive FREE access to ALL of the LIVE trainings I conduct (1 or 2 per month) - while non-members have to pay to access the live trainings.

Between my podcast training program, conducting podcast interviews, appearing on other podcasts as guests, speaking at conferences (in person and virtually) and the podcast networking platform, I guess you could say “I’m all in” when it comes to podcasting and online media!

My total focus is to do all we can to assist you to “Get The Word Out” about your mission, services, products, ministry, books, business, etc.
