Published on: 4th February, 2025

The Legacy of Abraham:

Family Matters in Genesis 25

Pastor Bob Thibodeau dives into the story of Abraham and his family in Genesis chapter 25. He discusses how Abraham had more children with Keturah after Sarah's death, which leads to the formation of nations that surround and often oppose Israel today.

The episode highlights the importance of not trying to help God fulfill His promises, as these attempts can lead to complications.

He also reflects on the dynamics between Isaac, Rebecca, and their sons, Jacob and Esau, emphasizing the role of favoritism in family relationships.

Pastor Bob wraps up with a reminder about the power of words and their lasting impact.

Takeaways:

  • Abraham had many children with Keturah after Sarah died, showing he was still active.
  • Isaac was 75 when Abraham died, and he was given the land by Abraham.
  • Esau sold his birthright to Jacob for a bowl of soup, showing poor decision-making.
  • The nations descended from Abraham's other children still cause issues for Israel today.
  • Words spoken have power, and they matter in our lives and relationship with God.
  • Isaac learned from Abraham's mistakes and prayed to God for help with Rebecca's barrenness.

Speaker A:

Hello, everyone, everywhere.

Speaker A:

Pastor Bob Thibodeau here.

Speaker A:

Welcome to your 15 minute daily Bible walk for today.

Speaker A:

We're so blessed that you're joining us.

Speaker A:

Praise God as we're getting ready to start.

Speaker A:

Genesis chapter 25.

Speaker A:

Genesis, chapter 25 left off last time with the servant of Abraham bringing Rebecca back from Abraham's family.

Speaker A:

And there, you know, she met Isaac.

Speaker A:

Isaac married her, took her into the tent, had relations with her, accepted her as his wife, and she became his wife.

Speaker A:

And then because of her, he was comforted after his mother's death.

Speaker A:

That was in chapter 24, verse 67.

Speaker A:

Now we're starting.

Speaker A:

Genesis, chapter 25, verse 1.

Speaker A:

Now we got some things to cover here.

Speaker A:

Verse 1.

Speaker A:

Then again, Abram took a wife and her name was Keturah.

Speaker A:

And she bore him Zimran and Jockshan and Madan, maiden and Midian and Ishbak and Shula and Jackson begot Sheba and Didan.

Speaker A:

The sons of Dedan were as serum and Latushim and Louhiminim.

Speaker A:

Again, my pronunciations of this, you know, you can read it and see what I'm saying.

Speaker A:

All right?

Speaker A:

The sons of Midian were ifa, Ifer, Hanak, Abida and Elda.

Speaker A:

All these were the children of Keturah.

Speaker A:

But Abraham, verse five, gave all that he had to Isaac.

Speaker A:

Now, let's back up just a second.

Speaker A:

Abraham went a hundred years with no kids.

Speaker A:

Amen.

Speaker A:

Sarah, no kids until they had Isaac.

Speaker A:

Now, Sarah died when Abraham was 137.

Speaker A:

And he had six more kids from Keturah.

Speaker A:

So he was still.

Speaker A:

When God blessed Abraham with the strength and Sarah with the ability to have Isaac, that strength, I guess you could say, was still making him.

Speaker A:

How can I put this in polite terminology?

Speaker A:

Lord?

Speaker A:

Abraham was still able to perform and have other children.

Speaker A:

Let's leave it at that.

Speaker A:

Amen.

Speaker A:

Now, if you just think about this, he had to be at least 143 years old when he's having more kids.

Speaker A:

Think about it.

Speaker A:

If Isaac had to reach the age of maturity to have a baby, all right?

Speaker A:

And then he had all these kids and one year apart, say it's just one year apart there, you add all that up, he's got to be about 143 years old, okay?

Speaker A:

Having kids.

Speaker A:

And these are.

Speaker A:

What's the importance?

Speaker A:

Why is the Bible talking about these?

Speaker A:

Well, these are the kids that form the nations that now hate Israel, right?

Speaker A:

Even though they're Isaac's brother.

Speaker A:

These are all Isaac's brothers.

Speaker A:

It doesn't even talk about the girls.

Speaker A:

Let's.

Speaker A:

There's you know.

Speaker A:

Anyway, let's just say that these are the families, Isaac's kindred, his brothers that now surround Israel and hate Israel.

Speaker A:

Why?

Speaker A:

Because.

Speaker A:

And we're going to read here in a second.

Speaker A:

Well, we'll just look there.

Speaker A:

Verse 5.

Speaker A:

Abraham gave all that he had.

Speaker A:

Isaac right.

Speaker A:

To the sons of the concubines which Abraham, he gave gifts and sent them away from Isaac his son, which he lived eastward unto the east country.

Speaker A:

And these are the.

Speaker A:

What does that mean?

Speaker A:

He gave them gifts.

Speaker A:

He gave Isaac the land.

Speaker A:

What is it?

Speaker A:

These nations that surround Israel, all the Muslim nations say they want the land.

Speaker A:

Right.

Speaker A:

They're still arguing over this today.

Speaker A:

Okay, Because Abraham want to continue to enjoy himself when he is old.

Speaker A:

We'll put it like that.

Speaker A:

Now, that became a thorn in the side of Isaac and his descendants.

Speaker A:

Amen.

Speaker A:

What does that tell us?

Speaker A:

What does, what does that have to say to us today?

Speaker A:

Don't try and help God out and give it a blessing, okay?

Speaker A:

Because when you try and do it on your own, it turns into a curse.

Speaker A:

And I'll just leave it at that.

Speaker A:

Anyway, chapter 25, verse 8.

Speaker A:

Abraham gave up the ghost, died in a good old age, an old man full of years, and was gathered to his people.

Speaker A:

Okay.

Speaker A:

And I'm sorry, Verse seven.

Speaker A:

These are the days of the years of Abraham's life which he lived 103 score and 50, 175 years old when he died.

Speaker A:

Okay, so Isaac, how old was Isaac or how old was Abraham when Isaac was born?

Speaker A:

100.

Speaker A:

Right.

Speaker A:

Ishmael was 88, 13 years.

Speaker A:

Right at that point.

Speaker A:

So Isaac here is 75, Ishmael's 88 when Abraham dies.

Speaker A:

All right, Abraham gave up the ghost, died in a good old age.

Speaker A:

An old man full of years was gathered to his people, his sons Isaac and Ishmael buried him in the cave of Mechpala in the field of Ephron, the son of Zoar, the headite, which is before Mamre.

Speaker A:

Other words, they took him back to bury him with Sarah, the field which Abraham purchased from the sons of Heth.

Speaker A:

There Abraham was buried and Sarah his wife.

Speaker A:

It came to pass after the death of Abraham that God blessed his son Isaac.

Speaker A:

And Isaac dwelt by the well of Lahore.

Speaker A:

Now these are the generations of Ishmael, Abraham's son, whom Hagar the Egyptian, Sarah's handmaid, bore to Abraham.

Speaker A:

These are the names of the sons of Ishmael.

Speaker A:

By their names, according to the generations, the firstborn of Ishmael.

Speaker A:

And again, I'm going to Mess up the names.

Speaker A:

You can go read the scriptures and read it for yourself.

Speaker A:

Okay, neighbor.

Speaker A:

Joth and Kedar and Admil and Mipsam and Mishma and.

Speaker A:

And Duma and Masa, Hadar and Tima, Jish and Kidima.

Speaker A:

These are the sons of Ishmael.

Speaker A:

These are their names by their towns, by their castles.

Speaker A:

12 princes according to their nations.

Speaker A:

Now these are the same nations that are bothering Israel today.

Speaker A:

Verse 17.

Speaker A:

These are the years of the life of Ishmael.

Speaker A:

137 years.

Speaker A:

He gave up the ghost and died and was gathered to his people.

Speaker A:

They dwelt from Havilah on the shore that is before Egypt as you go towards Assyria.

Speaker A:

And he died in the presence of all his brethren.

Speaker A:

Now here, if Ishmael was 13 when Isaac was born, and now he died was 137 years old.

Speaker A:

Okay, so Isaac 13 years less.

Speaker A:

He's 124 now at this point in time.

Speaker A:

These are the generations of Isaac, Abraham's son, Abraham of God, Isaac.

Speaker A:

Isaac was 40 years old when he took Rebecca as his wife.

Speaker A:

The daughter of Bethel, Syrian, the.

Speaker A:

The Syrian of Paternam, the sister to Laban, the Syrian.

Speaker A:

Isaac entreated the Lord for his wife because she was barren.

Speaker A:

The Lord was entreated of him.

Speaker A:

And Rebecca, his wife conceived and the children struggled together within her.

Speaker A:

And she said, if it's so, why am I like this?

Speaker A:

And she went to inquire of the Lord, okay?

Speaker A:

He prayed because he seen what happened when his mother hear the story, what happened with his mother and her, his dad, when they couldn't have babies.

Speaker A:

And the result was Ishmael.

Speaker A:

And he heard those stories, okay, that he was the promised son.

Speaker A:

Ishmael wasn't.

Speaker A:

And, and you know, at long story short, okay, he instead of trying to go and figure out a way to do it on their own, right, he prayed.

Speaker A:

That's what, that's what I want you to see here.

Speaker A:

He learned from his dad.

Speaker A:

He prayed because she was barren.

Speaker A:

And Lord heard him entreated of him.

Speaker A:

And Rebecca, his wife conceived.

Speaker A:

The children struggled together within her.

Speaker A:

She said, why am I like this?

Speaker A:

And she inquired of the Lord too.

Speaker A:

And the Lord said, there are two nations are in your womb.

Speaker A:

Two manner of people should be separated from your bowels.

Speaker A:

One people be stronger than the other and the elder shall serve the younger.

Speaker A:

Now that's not the way it's supposed to happen, okay?

Speaker A:

Usually the oldest is the.

Speaker A:

The one who rules, okay.

Speaker A:

He's the inheritor.

Speaker A:

He's the, the prince.

Speaker A:

He's the one that gets it all and.

Speaker A:

And, you know, and is in charge of the family.

Speaker A:

But here he's flipping the script a little bit.

Speaker A:

When her days to be delivered, fulfilled, behold, there were twins in her womb.

Speaker A:

And the first came out red all over like a hairy garment.

Speaker A:

They called his name Esau, and after that came his brother.

Speaker A:

And his hand took hold on Esau's heel.

Speaker A:

And his name was called Jacob.

Speaker A:

And Isaac was three score years old when she bore them.

Speaker A:

So Isaac was now 60 when she bore them.

Speaker A:

So the boys grew up.

Speaker A:

Esau was a cunning hunter, man of the field.

Speaker A:

Jacob was a plain man dwelling in tents.

Speaker A:

Isaac loved Esau because he ate from his venison.

Speaker A:

But Rebecca loved Jacob.

Speaker A:

Right?

Speaker A:

The first bore.

Speaker A:

The firstborn boy is Daddy's boy.

Speaker A:

Amen.

Speaker A:

Amen.

Speaker A:

Don't shout me down.

Speaker A:

I'm preaching.

Speaker A:

Good.

Speaker A:

I had two girls.

Speaker A:

But the firstborn grandson was Papa's boy.

Speaker A:

Amen.

Speaker A:

He and I were like this.

Speaker A:

I mean, we.

Speaker A:

We went golfing together and.

Speaker A:

I mean, we.

Speaker A:

We did everything together.

Speaker A:

And.

Speaker A:

And he's following in his papa's footsteps now.

Speaker A:

He's becoming a police officer and all that.

Speaker A:

But what am I saying is that the firstborn male is always Daddy's boy.

Speaker A:

Now, second one, you know, the.

Speaker A:

The baby of the family is usually.

Speaker A:

I'll just use the word spoiled.

Speaker A:

Okay?

Speaker A:

And who's the one who's usually doing the spoiling?

Speaker A:

Mamas.

Speaker A:

Now, my family say, papa, you spoil the grandkids.

Speaker A:

Well, that's Papa's job, okay?

Speaker A:

Papa's supposed to be that way.

Speaker A:

But I.

Speaker A:

I never called my grandkids a spoiled.

Speaker A:

Never.

Speaker A:

Not ever.

Speaker A:

I called him blessed.

Speaker A:

Exceedingly blessed.

Speaker A:

Blessed beyond they could even imagine.

Speaker A:

Think, you know, and one day we were at the grocery store.

Speaker A:

I'm just going to share this little tidbit real quick.

Speaker A:

And we're, you know, they.

Speaker A:

They were little, maybe two years old.

Speaker A:

And I think Christopher is three.

Speaker A:

Three or four.

Speaker A:

Anyway, I had him standing up in the shopping basket, right?

Speaker A:

We got up to check out, and I said, you guys want some candy?

Speaker A:

I put the candy up there.

Speaker A:

And the cashier turned around and looked at him, said, are you guys spoiled?

Speaker A:

Well, I had been telling them this since they were old enough to even understand that they were not spoiled.

Speaker A:

They were blessed.

Speaker A:

And I wish I had a camera, because both of them looked up, their head swivel, looked up at the lady, and simultaneously in stereo, said, we're not spoiled.

Speaker A:

We're blessed.

Speaker A:

Hey, man, that's what I knew.

Speaker A:

Yeah, he got in there, they Know it.

Speaker A:

And I can ask him.

Speaker A:

Today is 25 years ago.

Speaker A:

And I just asked my granddaughter the other day.

Speaker A:

I said, zoe, are you spoiled?

Speaker A:

She goes, no, I'm blessed.

Speaker A:

Amen.

Speaker A:

Praise God.

Speaker A:

So what you say to them matters.

Speaker A:

That's what I'm trying to get, a point.

Speaker A:

The point across here.

Speaker A:

And.

Speaker A:

And here we see Isaac and Rebecca.

Speaker A:

They had their favorites.

Speaker A:

That's the point I'm getting to.

Speaker A:

And Rebecca's kind of spoiling, you know, the.

Speaker A:

The.

Speaker A:

The boy a little bit here.

Speaker A:

Jacob.

Speaker A:

And you know, that's mama's boy.

Speaker A:

That's mama's boy.

Speaker A:

Or Asa, Papa's boy.

Speaker A:

You know, that's dad's son right there, okay?

Speaker A:

And they're growing up in this environment where they understand their roles.

Speaker A:

Let me put it like that, all right?

Speaker A:

And there's that jealousy.

Speaker A:

Jealousy.

Speaker A:

I'm not saying this is right, folks.

Speaker A:

Okay?

Speaker A:

What I'm saying, we're reading the scriptures here.

Speaker A:

What I'm saying is that that sometimes causes a division.

Speaker A:

And that's what we're going to see here, right?

Speaker A:

Verse 29, Jacob sod pottage.

Speaker A:

And Esau came in from the field and was faint.

Speaker A:

In other words, he was hungry.

Speaker A:

Been go all day.

Speaker A:

And Asa said to Jacob, feed me, I pray thee.

Speaker A:

With what?

Speaker A:

Some of that red pottage.

Speaker A:

You know, he said, give me some of that soup over there, boy.

Speaker A:

That's why his name was called Edom.

Speaker A:

And Jacob said, sell me your birthright.

Speaker A:

And he said, you know, Esau, he's flipping.

Speaker A:

He goes, I'm at the point.

Speaker A:

I'm starving to death over here.

Speaker A:

You're talking about birthright.

Speaker A:

What, Whatever.

Speaker A:

Just give me something to eat.

Speaker A:

You go swear to me this day.

Speaker A:

Oh, yeah, okay.

Speaker A:

Yeah, yeah, yeah.

Speaker A:

You're in charge.

Speaker A:

Gonna something to eat, boy.

Speaker A:

You know, he.

Speaker A:

He's.

Speaker A:

He's just playing it off.

Speaker A:

And he swore to him and sold his birthright to Jacob.

Speaker A:

And Jacob gave Esau bread and pottage of lentils, and he ate and drank, rose up and passed his way.

Speaker A:

Thus, Esau despised his birthright.

Speaker A:

He didn't value it, okay?

Speaker A:

He thought this just, you know, I'm ready to die over here.

Speaker A:

I'm starving to death, boy.

Speaker A:

Just, you know, you've been cooking soup all.

Speaker A:

Give me some of that soup over there.

Speaker A:

I want some of that sou.

Speaker A:

And that's what they're talking about, okay?

Speaker A:

It was just a flippant attitude, Esau.

Speaker A:

It may have, you know, he may have been serious or he may have been.

Speaker A:

Well, you're so hungry.

Speaker A:

Sell me your birthright.

Speaker A:

And I'll give you something to eat.

Speaker A:

But words matter, folks.

Speaker A:

That's the point I'm trying to get to.

Speaker A:

Words matter.

Speaker A:

God hears your voice.

Speaker A:

He hears your words.

Speaker A:

You speak even when you don't mean them.

Speaker A:

Okay?

Speaker A:

He still hears them.

Speaker A:

And words matter.

Speaker A:

Satan takes advantage of that.

Speaker A:

And that's what we're going to see.

Speaker A:

We'll leave it right there for today.

Speaker A:

We'll pick it up in chapter 26 next time.

Speaker A:

Till then, it's Pastor by reminding you to be blessed in all that you do.

About the Podcast

15 Minute Daily Bible Walk
Verse by Verse Through The Bible
This has been a project I have been contemplating for a long time.

Join me in walking through the Bible on our personal Bible study - one verse at at time. There is no "preaching" here. Just simple scripture reading with brief explanations and examples of what the scripture mean.

I was inspired to do this project based upon the program "Through The Bible" with Dr. Jay Veron McGee (who is passed on to be with the Lord for several years now). When I first started to study the Bible, his radio program helped me immensely. It took Dr. McGee 5 years to do a complete Bible Study.

I do not know how long it will take us. But you can start listening at anytime. My goal is to create a new episode each and every day (365 days per year).

Of course, "sometimes" life will get in the way (for many reasons). But I will pick it right back up where we left off (and try to catch up the days that were missed - to help keep us on track).

As I continue to add more episodes, you can join us at the most recent program or start at the beginning. Each episode is labeled as to the scriptures we are going to discuss.

I am so blessed you are here and I pray you will get a huge blessing as we join together in a "15 Minute Daily Bible Walk!" Amen!

About your host

Profile picture for Robert Thibodeau

Robert Thibodeau

I am a 12 year Army veteran as both enlisted and as a commissioned Cavalry Officer.
I am now a retired law enforcement supervisor...

I had my own business for seven years before I entered law enforcement.

As a cop, I was injured on the job on May 12, 2007 and after several surgeries over a couple of years, forced to retire in 2011.

As I was looking down the road to “what am I going to do next?” I started what is now known as a podcast (I had no clue at the time).

Within six months of starting (what I called) “My online radio program” I was offered an opportunity to be on nationwide AM radio. I learned A LOT in one year of doing that!

I then started the online Christian radio platform "Evangelism Radio" in the fall of 2010. It has had listeners in 160+ nations and all 50 states. We host 50+ Christian broadcasters on a weekly basis. We have been operating 24/7 for almost 14 years now. We have been rated #1 in the world by Shoutcast. com on several occasions in our genre. We recently transferred ownership of Evangelism Radio to another ministry so I could concentrate full time on podcasting, preaching and writing.

In 2018, I started the Kingdom Cross Roads Podcast to conduct interviews with Christian influencers from all walks of life and to play their interviews on the radio station. (The KCR Podcast has its own time slot on Evangelism Radio)!
We now have over 1600 episodes and almost 1100 interviews (in just over 6 years).

Looking out at the future of online Christian media, I noticed there was no viable platforms that catered only to the Christian podcast market.

In 2023, we launched a networking platform called, "FaithCasters" which connects "Great Christian podcasters with Great Christian Guests!" This helps to promote the work you do through podcast interviews! Check it out at https://FaithCaster.org

We recently launched "FaithCaster Academy" which serves as a training hub for ALL of our trainings (podcast training / speaker training / interview training, etc.). Members receive access to ALL of our training programs for one low, monthly membership fee. Members also receive FREE access to ALL of the LIVE trainings I conduct (1 or 2 per month) - while non-members have to pay to access the live trainings.

Between my podcast training program, conducting podcast interviews, appearing on other podcasts as guests, speaking at conferences (in person and virtually) and the podcast networking platform, I guess you could say “I’m all in” when it comes to podcasting and online media!

My total focus is to do all we can to assist you to “Get The Word Out” about your mission, services, products, ministry, books, business, etc.
