God's Covenant Renewed:

From Abram to Abraham

Pastor Bob discusses the implications of compromises in our faith, using the story of Abram and Sarai's decision to have a child through Hagar, resulting in Ishmael.

He emphasizes that this choice was a deviation from God's plan and serves as a reminder of how taking matters into one's own hands can lead to unintended consequences.

The episode explores the significance of God's covenant with Abram, highlighting the transformation of Abram's name to Abraham as a reflection of God's commitment to him and his descendants.

Pastor Bob also notes the 13-year silence from God following Abram's compromise, illustrating the importance of patience and trust in divine timing. Ultimately, the discussion serves as a powerful lesson on the need for sincerity and faithfulness in one’s relationship with God.

Takeaways:

  • Compromising on God's promises can lead to negative consequences, as seen with Ishmael.
  • Abram's experience highlights the importance of waiting for God's timing in our lives.
  • God renewed His covenant with Abram after 13 years of silence due to Abram's mistakes.
  • The name change from Abram to Abraham signifies God's presence and promise in his life.
  • Hagar's story reveals that God sees and cares for those who are marginalized.
  • Understanding God's names, such as El Shaddai, enhances our relationship with Him.

Pastor Bob:

Hello everyone, everywhere.

Pastor Bob:

Pastor Bob Thibodeau here.

Pastor Bob:

Welcome to your daily Bible 15 minute daily Bible walk.

Pastor Bob:

So bless you're joining us today.

Pastor Bob:

Last time we left off with a story of Abram and Sarai coming up with the plan to go into Hagar and the result was an Ishmael.

Pastor Bob:

And we went into detail about Ishmael is a compromise.

Pastor Bob:

And we, we left off with the question, how have you compromised God's promises?

Pastor Bob:

Trying to help God along and bring him to.

Pastor Bob:

Because usually it doesn't work out.

Pastor Bob:

It may seem cool on the, in the front end.

Pastor Bob:

It may seem like it's working on the front end.

Pastor Bob:

Usually though it'll come back to bite you later.

Pastor Bob:

Right?

Pastor Bob:

And we see that with Ishmael.

Pastor Bob:

We see Ishmael and his descendants have been a constant thorn in Israel's side ever since.

Pastor Bob:

Right?

Pastor Bob:

So that was where we left it off with yesterday.

Pastor Bob:

Today we're going to continue now in Genesis chapter 16, we get in verse.

Pastor Bob:

I'll go ahead and we finished with verse six last time.

Pastor Bob:

That's where I'm gonna pick it up at this time.

Pastor Bob:

So we lay the foundation of what's going to happen.

Pastor Bob:

And we'll talk about today.

Pastor Bob:

Abram said unto Sarai, behold, your maid is in your hand.

Pastor Bob:

Do to her as it pleases you.

Pastor Bob:

When Sarai dealt harshly with her, she fled from her face.

Pastor Bob:

Hagar fled.

Pastor Bob:

And the angel of the Lord found her by a fountain of water in the wilderness, by the fountain on the way to shore.

Pastor Bob:

And he said, hagar, Sarah's maid, why have you come here?

Pastor Bob:

Where are you going?

Pastor Bob:

And she said, I flee from the face of my Mr.

Pastor Bob:

Sarai.

Pastor Bob:

And the angel, Lord said to her, return to your mistress.

Pastor Bob:

Submit yourself under her hands.

Pastor Bob:

And the angel of the Lord, remember, Lord's all capitalized here.

Pastor Bob:

So that means Elohim, the angel of the Elohim said unto her, I will multiply your seed exceedingly.

Pastor Bob:

I will multiply your descendants exceedingly, that it should not be numbered for the multitude.

Pastor Bob:

And the angel of Elohim said to her, behold, you are with child.

Pastor Bob:

You shall bear a son and you shall call his name Ishmael because the Lord has heard your affliction.

Pastor Bob:

Ishmael actually means God shall hear.

Pastor Bob:

We use the terminology in our example yesterday.

Pastor Bob:

And that Ishmael is basically a compromise offering here.

Pastor Bob:

Now here he says, your witch house a bear a son.

Pastor Bob:

You should call his name Ishmael because the Lord has heard your affliction.

Pastor Bob:

And he will be a wild man.

Pastor Bob:

And yes, his descendants are.

Pastor Bob:

His hand will Be against every other man.

Pastor Bob:

Yes, his descendants are.

Pastor Bob:

Every man's hand will be against him.

Pastor Bob:

Yes, his descendants are.

Pastor Bob:

And he shall dwell in the presence of all his brethren.

Pastor Bob:

Yes, his descendants do.

Pastor Bob:

And she called the name of the Lord the name of hello that spoke unto her.

Pastor Bob:

You God see me.

Pastor Bob:

For she said, here have I also here looked after him that sees me.

Pastor Bob:

Therefore the well was called Bear Lahai Roy.

Pastor Bob:

Bear Lahai Roy, which is the well of him that lives and sees me.

Pastor Bob:

And it is between Kadesh and bered, verse 15.

Pastor Bob:

And Hagar bore Abram a son.

Pastor Bob:

And Abram called his son's name, which Hagar Bear, Ishmael.

Pastor Bob:

And Abram was 86 years old when Hagar bore Ishmael to Abram.

Pastor Bob:

That concludes chapter 16.

Pastor Bob:

Let's continue now in verse 17 between what I just finished right there in chapter 16, verse 16, and chapter 17, verse 1.

Pastor Bob:

We see here verse 16 says Abram was four score and six years old, 86 years old.

Pastor Bob:

When Hagar bore Ishmael to Abram, verse 7, or chapter 17, verse 1.

Pastor Bob:

And when Abram was 90 years old or 99 years old.

Pastor Bob:

So we have Abram was 86 years old.

Pastor Bob:

Now he's 99 years old.

Pastor Bob:

13 years.

Pastor Bob:

13 years.

Pastor Bob:

Between chapter 16, verse 16, and Chapter 17, verse 1.

Pastor Bob:

Abram does not hear anything from God.

Pastor Bob:

Not one recorded word.

Pastor Bob:

Why?

Pastor Bob:

Because Abram decided he was going to try and do it on his own.

Pastor Bob:

Him, Sarai and Hagar got together and developed a plan.

Pastor Bob:

And it was not God's plan.

Pastor Bob:

Don't shut me down when I'm preaching.

Pastor Bob:

Good.

Pastor Bob:

Now, some of you out there have done the same exact thing.

Pastor Bob:

I know Pastor Bob raises his hand.

Pastor Bob:

I'm not perfect.

Pastor Bob:

I've developed my own plans outside of God's plans.

Pastor Bob:

And guess what?

Pastor Bob:

They didn't work out either.

Pastor Bob:

Amen.

Pastor Bob:

So don't shout me down when I'm preaching.

Pastor Bob:

Good.

Pastor Bob:

Because I know I'm stepping on some spiritual toes out there.

Pastor Bob:

So chapter 17, verse 1.

Pastor Bob:

When Abram was 99 years old, Elohim appeared to Abram and said to him, I am the Almighty God.

Pastor Bob:

That's a different name.

Pastor Bob:

That is a different name.

Pastor Bob:

He's been Elohim.

Pastor Bob:

Now he says, I am the almighty God.

Pastor Bob:

That is translated as El Shaddai.

Pastor Bob:

El Shaddai is.

Pastor Bob:

Is actually like the breasty one.

Pastor Bob:

In other words, the nourisher.

Pastor Bob:

The reference here is to female breasts.

Pastor Bob:

Nursing children, okay?

Pastor Bob:

Provides all the nourishment they need.

Pastor Bob:

The mother provides everything that baby needs to sustain itself.

Pastor Bob:

Here God says, I am El Shaddai, I am the almighty God.

Pastor Bob:

I am the El Shaddai.

Pastor Bob:

And you walk before me and be thou perfect.

Pastor Bob:

Be thou perfect, straight, upright, be sincere when you're dealing with me.

Pastor Bob:

That's what the middle reference talks about.

Pastor Bob:

He said, if you'll do that, if you'll walk before me and be sincere in what you're doing.

Pastor Bob:

Verse 2.

Pastor Bob:

I will make my covenant between you and me and will multiply you exceedingly.

Pastor Bob:

Here's the same promise he had 13 years before.

Pastor Bob:

Remember, he walked, Abram, seeing God's footsteps in that offering where he made a covenant with him, making these promises.

Pastor Bob:

But Abram decided he needed to help God out a little bit.

Pastor Bob:

And that was the result of.

Pastor Bob:

And that resulted in Ishmael.

Pastor Bob:

And we went into detail of that.

Pastor Bob:

Go back, listen to the prior episode and you'll catch up on that.

Pastor Bob:

But here he says, you do this.

Pastor Bob:

You walk before me, upright and sincere in your heart.

Pastor Bob:

I'll provide everything you need.

Pastor Bob:

I'm El Shaddai.

Pastor Bob:

Hallelujah.

Pastor Bob:

Praise God.

Pastor Bob:

Don't shut me down.

Pastor Bob:

I'm preaching.

Pastor Bob:

Good.

Pastor Bob:

Verse 3.

Pastor Bob:

Abram fell on his face.

Pastor Bob:

He's worshiping now.

Pastor Bob:

Praise God.

Pastor Bob:

Thank you for coming back, talking to me again.

Pastor Bob:

God, always so good to hear from you.

Pastor Bob:

I can just imagine he is just thrilled right here.

Pastor Bob:

Thirteen years, he was seeking God and God hadn't said a word.

Pastor Bob:

How many of us have gone through a period of time where your spouse did something just rub you the wrong way?

Pastor Bob:

And you're gonna let them know?

Pastor Bob:

How you gonna let them know?

Pastor Bob:

You give them the silent treatment.

Pastor Bob:

Ladies are real good at that.

Pastor Bob:

And guys, here's a hint.

Pastor Bob:

You ask her what's wrong, she says, nothing.

Pastor Bob:

Don't believe it.

Pastor Bob:

Don't believe it.

Pastor Bob:

I made that mistake.

Pastor Bob:

Well, if nothing's wrong, then get your attitude straight.

Pastor Bob:

Oh, no, no, no, no.

Pastor Bob:

Anyway, different story for a different day.

Pastor Bob:

Amen.

Pastor Bob:

The point being here 13 years, Abram, he was, you know, remember he.

Pastor Bob:

He had a covenant with God.

Pastor Bob:

He seen God.

Pastor Bob:

God come down and fellowshiped with him.

Pastor Bob:

And Here he goes, 13 years without hearing a word.

Pastor Bob:

And now Harry shows up and he says, I am he.

Pastor Bob:

Abram knew who it was because it says, elohim showed up, appeared to Abram and said, I am now going to be your El Shaddai.

Pastor Bob:

I am going to be your provider.

Pastor Bob:

All you got to do is walk before me and be sincere when you do it, in all your ways, you do this.

Pastor Bob:

Verse 2.

Pastor Bob:

I'll make my covenant between you and me and will multiply you exceedingly now he's renewing that promise of giving him some descendants.

Pastor Bob:

Abram fell on his face and God talked with him saying, as for me, behold, my covenant is with you.

Pastor Bob:

And you shall be the father of many nations.

Pastor Bob:

Neither shall your name anymore be called Abram, but your name shall be Abraham.

Pastor Bob:

Now I want you to stop here.

Pastor Bob:

Abram and Abraham.

Pastor Bob:

There's an H in the middle of his name.

Pastor Bob:

Now God himself has said.

Pastor Bob:

God has sheen.

Pastor Bob:

He has put himself in the middle of Abram's name.

Pastor Bob:

So you can't say Abram anymore because that's not his name.

Pastor Bob:

But when you say Abraham, you're That is that covenant relationship right there.

Pastor Bob:

God is in the midst of Abraham.

Pastor Bob:

Amen.

Pastor Bob:

I hope you see that.

Pastor Bob:

Look, get your Bible out and look at it now.

Pastor Bob:

Verse 7.

Pastor Bob:

Your name shall be Abram with an H in the middle makes it Abraham.

Pastor Bob:

For a father of many nations, I have made you.

Pastor Bob:

And I will make you exceedingly fruitful.

Pastor Bob:

And I'll make nations out of you.

Pastor Bob:

And kings shall come out of you.

Pastor Bob:

And I shall establish my covenant between me and you and your seed, your descendants after you in their generations.

Pastor Bob:

For an everlasting covenant to be a God unto you and to your seed, a God unto you and a God unto your descendants after you.

Pastor Bob:

And I will give unto you and to your seed after you, to your descendants after you, the land wherein you are a stranger, all of the land of Canaan for an everlasting possession.

Pastor Bob:

And I will be their God.

Pastor Bob:

Amen.

Pastor Bob:

Praise God.

Pastor Bob:

We'll stop right there for today.

Pastor Bob:

And that is when God gave him that land of Canaan.

Pastor Bob:

He gave him the land of Canaan.

Pastor Bob:

God gave it to him.

Pastor Bob:

So the.

Pastor Bob:

The Muslims claim that that land belonged to them.

Pastor Bob:

Well, not according to God.

Pastor Bob:

Period.

Pastor Bob:

End of story.

Pastor Bob:

You got an issue, take it up with him.

Pastor Bob:

Amen.

Pastor Bob:

Don't shut me down.

Pastor Bob:

I'm preaching good.

Pastor Bob:

Praise the Lord.

Pastor Bob:

Don't send me your nasty emails either.

Pastor Bob:

I don't read them anyway.

Pastor Bob:

Praise God.

Pastor Bob:

The point being, the point that I want to take from today.

Pastor Bob:

When Abram tried to do God's job, put it like that.

Pastor Bob:

And that was getting a boy born into this earth from Abram's loins.

Pastor Bob:

They came up with the plan, going to Hagar, have a.

Pastor Bob:

Have a baby with this young spry 20 year old or whatever.

Pastor Bob:

And it became a thorn in Abram's side.

Pastor Bob:

It was a compromise.

Pastor Bob:

Ishmael has been bothering the descendants of Abraham ever since.

Pastor Bob:

Thirteen years went by till God came back down to renew the covenant and said all right, you messed up, boy.

Pastor Bob:

Why 13 years?

Pastor Bob:

We didn't go over that.

Pastor Bob:

Why 13 years?

Pastor Bob:

Because in that culture, remember bar mitzvah and all that, at age 13, that's because at that point in time, he's considered an adult.

Pastor Bob:

He is able to take care of himself and his family.

Pastor Bob:

So up till then, it was up to the boy, up to the man of the house to take care of that boy.

Pastor Bob:

Age 13, a boy is going to take care of himself.

Pastor Bob:

So God say, okay, you wanted this boy see you when he.

Pastor Bob:

When there's no longer be an issue here.

Pastor Bob:

And that's when God showed back up 13 years later and said, now let's try this again.

Pastor Bob:

But this time, instead of having Sarah, I call you Abram, she's going to call you Abraham so that she has to say God's name, too.

Pastor Bob:

Amen.

Pastor Bob:

Think about that.

Pastor Bob:

God put his name in the midst of Abram's name.

Pastor Bob:

So every time someone says Abraham, they're actually saying Abram.

Pastor Bob:

And the God of Abram, that's what they're saying here.

Pastor Bob:

We'll leave it right there.

Pastor Bob:

Drop down the show notes.

Pastor Bob:

Leave your comments down below.

Pastor Bob:

Let me know what you think about this.

Pastor Bob:

This is a huge, huge revelation for somebody out there that's just hearing this.

Pastor Bob:

I know it is.

Pastor Bob:

Till next time, it's Pastor Bob reminding you to be blessed in all that you do.

About the Podcast

15 Minute Daily Bible Walk
Verse by Verse Through The Bible
This has been a project I have been contemplating for a long time.

Join me in walking through the Bible on our personal Bible study - one verse at at time. There is no "preaching" here. Just simple scripture reading with brief explanations and examples of what the scripture mean.

I was inspired to do this project based upon the program "Through The Bible" with Dr. Jay Veron McGee (who is passed on to be with the Lord for several years now). When I first started to study the Bible, his radio program helped me immensely. It took Dr. McGee 5 years to do a complete Bible Study.

I do not know how long it will take us. But you can start listening at anytime. My goal is to create a new episode each and every day (365 days per year).

Of course, "sometimes" life will get in the way (for many reasons). But I will pick it right back up where we left off (and try to catch up the days that were missed - to help keep us on track).

As I continue to add more episodes, you can join us at the most recent program or start at the beginning. Each episode is labeled as to the scriptures we are going to discuss.

I am so blessed you are here and I pray you will get a huge blessing as we join together in a "15 Minute Daily Bible Walk!" Amen!

About your host

Profile picture for Robert Thibodeau

Robert Thibodeau

I am a 12 year Army veteran as both enlisted and as a commissioned Cavalry Officer.
I am now a retired law enforcement supervisor...

I had my own business for seven years before I entered law enforcement.

As a cop, I was injured on the job on May 12, 2007 and after several surgeries over a couple of years, forced to retire in 2011.

As I was looking down the road to “what am I going to do next?” I started what is now known as a podcast (I had no clue at the time).

Within six months of starting (what I called) “My online radio program” I was offered an opportunity to be on nationwide AM radio. I learned A LOT in one year of doing that!

I then started the online Christian radio platform "Evangelism Radio" in the fall of 2010. It has had listeners in 160+ nations and all 50 states. We host 50+ Christian broadcasters on a weekly basis. We have been operating 24/7 for almost 14 years now. We have been rated #1 in the world by Shoutcast. com on several occasions in our genre. We recently transferred ownership of Evangelism Radio to another ministry so I could concentrate full time on podcasting, preaching and writing.

In 2018, I started the Kingdom Cross Roads Podcast to conduct interviews with Christian influencers from all walks of life and to play their interviews on the radio station. (The KCR Podcast has its own time slot on Evangelism Radio)!
We now have over 1600 episodes and almost 1100 interviews (in just over 6 years).

Looking out at the future of online Christian media, I noticed there was no viable platforms that catered only to the Christian podcast market.

In 2023, we launched a networking platform called, "FaithCasters" which connects "Great Christian podcasters with Great Christian Guests!" This helps to promote the work you do through podcast interviews! Check it out at https://FaithCaster.org

We recently launched "FaithCaster Academy" which serves as a training hub for ALL of our trainings (podcast training / speaker training / interview training, etc.). Members receive access to ALL of our training programs for one low, monthly membership fee. Members also receive FREE access to ALL of the LIVE trainings I conduct (1 or 2 per month) - while non-members have to pay to access the live trainings.

Between my podcast training program, conducting podcast interviews, appearing on other podcasts as guests, speaking at conferences (in person and virtually) and the podcast networking platform, I guess you could say “I’m all in” when it comes to podcasting and online media!

My total focus is to do all we can to assist you to “Get The Word Out” about your mission, services, products, ministry, books, business, etc.
